Program Description

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Health Care Certification Program is a 10-week, project-based program designed to combine the valuable techniques of Lean and Six Sigma into one comprehensive program designed specifically for health care professionals. This certification program provides the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage Lean Six Sigma projects within the health care setting to improve patient and care delivery outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  • Construct a project charter with focus on the Voice of the Customer and Dimensions of Quality.
  • Baseline current state of your process based on amount of waste and efficiency within the health care setting.
  • Collect and analyze data to represent the current state of your project, designed to tackle real-world issues within health care.
  • Create a visual representation of your current process using a process map and be able to identify the wastes in your process.
  • Utilize Qualitative and Quantitative tools to identify root causes and impact of your input variables and create improvements.
  • Develop and evaluate potential solutions to reduce waste, improve patient outcomes and care delivery positively impacting safety and quality in the health care setting
  • Assess new changes to care delivery and patient outcomes are consistently implemented and develop a plan to ensure performance improvements are sustained within the health care delivery system.

Earning a Certificate

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Health Care certification program uses Canvas™ for the facilitation of communications between the course facilitator and participants, submission of assessments, program material, and posting of grades. The program is a combination of course-work, assessment quizzes, tollgates and completion of an applied project. Many of the deliverables are aligned to assignments and project status updates, or Tollgates. All submissions must be made through the Canvas learning system. Students will progress through the course individually but are part of a cohort with a defined start and end date to guide completion of the course-work.

For successful completion of the certification, participants must:

  • Receive 70% or higher average on all combined program deliverables.
  • Receive a 70% score or higher on the Green Belt final exam.
  • Successfully complete a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt applied project.

Who Should Enroll

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Health Care certification program is designed for professionals in a wide range of health care industries with various backgrounds including health care clinicians, health care administrators, quality and/or patient safety officers, health professions students, supply chain specialists in health care, patient experience officers and care transformation specialists.

Instructional Team

The Lean Six Sigma Green Belt - Health Care certification program was designed by a team of faculty members, industry professionals, instructional designers and experienced Lean Six Sigma professionals to ensure the learning objectives, course framework and assessments are validated and aligned to industry needs and standards. The curriculum, instructional videos, exams and activities for this program were led by the following instructors.

 Lisa Custer

Lisa has over 25 years of working experience in all aspects of process management and continuous improvement. Her work spans Six Sigma, Lean, Design, Total Productive Maintenance, and Total Quality Management. Prior titles include Principal with Accenture, Director with George Group Consulting, and Director of Quality in the semiconductor industry. She holds a Ph.D. and MSE in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University and a Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Britany Williams

Britany is the Operations Administrator for the Department of Access Management at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and holds the academic rank of Instructor in the Mayo College of Medicine and Science. She supports a team of dedicated healthcare professionals in a challenging environment as they provide world-class care. Her challenging role as a leader in the Department of Neurology allows her to fulfill her professional mission to provide quality care and create a positive experience for all patients.
