Binil Starly

Binil Starly serves as the inaugural School Director and Motorola Professor in the School of Manufacturing Systems & Networks at Arizona State University, leading a group of 22 faculty including 3 academic program directors, and more than 13 staff within the School. The School currently has >350 students, >$14M (FY2024) annual research expenditures, 9 current and past NSF CAREER awardees. Since its founding, we have raised $2.5M+ cash donations to fund scholarships, capstone projects, applied projects and lab equipment. The school focuses its academic and research programs at the interface of Manufacturing processes, Industrial robotics and physical AI. 
 
For the Fulton Schools of Engineering, he leads the Workforce Development strategy for Microelectronics and Advanced Manufacturing. He has over 25 years of experience in digital manufacturing in the areas of model-based definition, intelligent machines, decentralized manufacturing, additive manufacturing, and factory automation. His laboratory is working on technologies that merge the digital and the physical world towards advancing both discrete and continuous manufacturing processes. His work is supported by the US National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and the Department of War. He has received the National Science Foundation CAREER award for research in bio-additive manufacturing, SME ‘20 Most Influential Professors in Smart Manufacturing’, SME Young Manufacturing Engineering Award (2011) and numerous teaching awards.
